July 15 Provence

July 15

Our second day in Nice. Here is Paulette and Claude on the Promenade des Anglais, which is a wide walkway that runs along the entire beach. It was built in the early 1820's by a group of rich Englishmen, who would winter in Nice and they wanted a nice walkway to stroll the beach.

In all of France, not just Nice, the beaches are divided between areas where you can pay admission and get a parasol for shade, lounging chairs, and usually a snackbar where you can get drinks and food. Or you can use the open areas where you can lie on your own beachtowel, for free. There is usually a small fence between the two areas.

This shows how long the beach is in Nice, actually goes much further then the photo shows. Its about 7 kilometres and the Promenade runs along all of it. The one thing about the beach in Nice, if you ever go, its all small pebbles, not nice sand like the rest of the French beaches. It doesn't seem to stop people from enjoying it.

We left the beach area to visit the Old Port. This a now a very nice marina, that has luxery yachts on one side and small open sailing boats on the other.

Our favourite part was the small boat area, as the boats were so colorful.

Just a sample of some of the boats.

More of them.

And again.

We also visited the old city, which was built in medieval times. Here is a street scene in this area. Worth a visit, full of shops and restaurants, as well as old churches.
