July 05 Languedoc-Roussillon

July 05
We spent all day in one town; Collioure. Here we are driving towards the Pyrenees. Collioure is about a 30 minute drive from Canet, towards the Spanish border.

An intersection in Collioure.

Just one of many odd vehicles we saw while in Europe. This small truck is a three wheeler.

Collioure has many beautiful side streets that are pedestrian only.

This is the church Notre Dame des Anges. It was built in the 1600's and the steeple also doubled as a lighthouse. Collioure is an old fishing port. The main catch is anchovies.

The centre of town has a few beaches. Claude and I are standing in front of one, next to the church.

Paulette and Darlene.

This is the Chateau Royale, built by the Knights Templar in the 1200's. Part of it is now an active military base. It is normally open to the public and Claude and I wanted to visit it, but it was closed that day because of military exercises going on.

Paulette resting on the Collioure waterfront, next to some colourful sailboats.

View from the breakwater looking back on the town. If you click on the photo to blow it up, you will notice a tower up in the hills. This is the Tour de Madeloc, an ancient military lookout.

Another beach in Collioure. Up in the hills is the Fort Saint Elme, another ancient military post.

A windmill just above the town.

This an old lighthouse at the end of the breakwater.

Looking back at Collioure from the end of the breakwater.

Compared to Canet, with its flat long sandy beaches, this section of the coast is very rocky. These kids were having a great time in the breaking waves, luckily none got washed out to sea.

Walking along a street along the waterfront.
